When lighting a bathroom, it is important to combine different environments. The bathroom is a space in which we need the precision of cold light and the temperance of warmer lights. The bathtub is a relaxation area where comfort and tranquility must prevail. The sink and mirror area, on the other hand, require more intense light, in line with the tasks we perform there. Therefore lighting must be designed taking these needs into account. Obviously, we will also take into account aspects such as decoration, harmony, tastes and, of course, security.
Lighting a bathroom with LEDs, in addition to the traditional advantages related to low consumption or long life, offers us an almost infinite range of possibilities.
General Lighting
We will start with the LED lamps for the ceiling. They are the best way to provide uniform lighting for the entire bathroom. The dimension of the bathroom and the height of the ceiling must be taken into account. According to this, it will be determined whether to use 1, 2 or more lamps. For small bathrooms (up to 6m²) one lamp is enough. From 6 to 12 m², the ideal would be to install two lamps. If we want to illuminate a bathroom of more than 12 m², we must consider using 3 ceiling lamps. With this we would form the base or general lighting of the bathroom.
Focused Lighting
We have already designed the main lighting in the bathroom. Now it’s time to talk about localized lighting or focused lighting. This is done in those areas of the bathroom where direct lighting is required (sink, basically). For this, the ideal is to use an LED spotlight (on the wall or built into the mirror).
We will place the Main Lighting switches on the wall opposite to the direction in which the door opens. This way, when you open the door you can turn on the light before entering the bathroom. Likewise, the light switch should be on the wall of the sink. In this way, the LED lamp will be independent of the LED spotlight to use only the lighting necessary for each activity.
Bathtub and Shower
In addition, we will illuminate the shower or bathtub area. To do this, it is recommended to use a dim light that allows relaxation and enjoyment of the bath. Intense light in this area can be uncomfortable. Therefore, one option is to use a decorative light such as a LED spotlight embedded in a wall, special for wet areas.
Security
Let’s not forget that this area is the most humid in the house so let’s keep it in mind and avoid accidents resulting from contact between water and electrical appliances. All equipment must comply with IP44 water protection requirements.
