To Install an LED Downlight on the ceiling, the first thing is to check that the voltage of the equipment is the same as that of the current. In the vast majority of cases it will be like this, but that does not mean we should forget to do it. Secondly, we will see if the hole is enough to install an LED Downlight or we have to modify the hole. In addition, it will be necessary to create a new electrical point. To do this we will transfer the current from the closest electrical point. If there is already an electrical point in the place where we want to place the downlight, the installation of the downlight will be much easier.
LED technology has arrived, and brings with it a wide variety of applications for the home, office, shopping centers… One of the new lighting options is the LED downlight. The LED downlight is a lamp made up of a set of LEDs connected in series. This type of light is capable of illuminating an area with clarity and power. It does not generate heat and its electricity consumption is reduced.
The downlight have an extra-flat design, are easy to recess into the ceiling, simple to install and have an elegant and sophisticated appearance. They can be used to illuminate rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, and other areas.
Once we know where to install the LED downlight, we have the hole and the electrical point, the first thing to do is cut off the light in the affected area. It is important not to forget this step since our safety depends on it. We double check that the hole measurements match the installation needs of our equipment and we move forward.
Now it’s time to identify the cables from the outlet. This way we will know which cable corresponds to the “phase” and which corresponds to the “neutral”. Next we will do the same with our downlight. Typically, the «hot» wire is brown, black or gray, while the neutral is usually blue.
Once the cables have been identified, we proceed with the electrical installation. To do this, we use a two-pole power strip or terminal block. Connect the cables from the power outlet to the power strip and at the other end we will connect the cables coming from the “driver” of the LED downlight. If we see that the cables are very long, we can cut them, although it is not usually necessary. If we cut them, we will have to strip the cable so that it makes a connection when inserting it into the strip.
Once the electrical connection is completed, the LED downlight is recessed into the ceiling. In this step, you must be careful that the connections remain in place and that the downlight does not step on the cables when being recessed into the ceiling. We see that the equipment comes with fastening tabs. We fold the tabs up and place the device in place. Once the downlight is placed, the tabs will apply pressure so that it remains fixed and does not move.
Once we have finished installing the LED downlight, we reactivate the power and check that everything works.
